DAPP (Distemper, Adenovirus, Parainfluenza and Parvovirus): This is a 5-way vaccine which is recommended for every dog. Distemper is a severe and sometimes deadly virus that can affect the entire body, including the brain. Parvo is another dangerous virus which causes severe intestinal disease and dehydration. Puppies are given a series of DAPP vaccinations, 3-4 weeks apart, usually starting at 6-8 weeks old, and ending at 14-16 weeks of age. The DAPP vaccine is boostered 1 year later and is then recommended every 3 years.
RABIES: Rabies is an invariably lethal disease which causes abnormal and sometimes aggressive behavior. It can be passed on to people. Rabies vaccination of dogs is required by D.C. law at 12 weeks of age, 1 year later, and then every 3 years.
BORDETELLA (Kennel Cough): Bordetella causes respiratory disease which can sometimes lead to pneumonia. This vaccine is recommended for dogs that come in contact with other dogs. It is given to puppies and then repeated yearly.
LEPTOSPIROSIS: Dogs can get this bacterial disease through contact with the urine of a variety of animals, including rodents, and can lead to kidney and liver failure. It can also be passed on to people. The vaccine is recommended for dogs who may drink from or wade in standing pools of water.
LYME : This disease is carried by ticks, and can cause flu-like symptoms, lameness, and kidney damage. We recommend you discuss this vaccine with our veterinarians, and most importantly, protect your dog from ticks.
FLU : The dog flu has been in the media recently, thanks to increased reports of outbreaks and new strains. While most cases of dog flu are not fatal, the canine influenza virus can make your dog uncomfortably sick, causing him—and you—a lot of stress and time spent at the vet’s office. If you are a dog owner, you don’t need to panic about the dog flu. You should, however, familiarize yourself with the symptoms of dog flu so that you know what to look for in the event of an outbreak in your area. Click this link for more information.
